What you really need to know about Wedding Ministers:
The state of Wisconsin does not regulate wedding ministers.
So what does that mean to you?
• There is a possibility that your marriage could be invalid, potentially affecting your spiritual, legal and financial future.
• Anyone can sign and send in your license, but is the marriage valid?
• Many wedding ministers only have internet ordinations, not real ordinations by a real church denomination. Meaning, they pay a small fee over the internet, usually $15-$25, they get a business card and a certificate of ordination saying they are ordained. No training is involved, they just pay their fee. Many have no physical address, just a website and phone in their home. Others self appoint themselves as a wedding minister and still others will be anything people want them to be, anything from Buddhist to New Age to Jewish and even Christian all in one minister.
How can you know who is a legitimate minister?
Two ways:
1. By a pastor who has a real church and building with
regular church services and outreach programs.
Also important is that a church and its pastor have a Bishop to be accountable to.
2. A Justice of the Peace (this is usually a lawyer or a retired judge).
